Eleven
I really wanted to use Saturday to prepare for our meeting with Mr. Olusesan on Monday but my secondary school classmates, Alex and Sandra were getting married and I was supposed to be on the bridal train.
Now Alex’s circle of friends had a wide range of guys from Nigeria to New York, from World Bank to Chevron – all sorts of young eligible and successful bachelors… and I am single and definitely ready to mingle.
Like a kid in a candy store, one fine boy after the other pranced about; but one held my attention.
He stole glances. I stole glances.
We stole glances at each other until it was time to go home.
Sigh… But why are Lagos weddings like this? As the DJ started winding down and the crowd thinned out, I grabbed a male friend of mine, Eromz, whom I had seen talking to the “Stealer-of-Glances” at some point in time.
“Do you like him?” he said, with that knowing smile.
“Well… he isn’t bad on the eyes”, I replied – acting like I couldn’t care less. Eromz gave that knowing laugh and walked off.
He probably thought I was forming (acting coy). And there goes my last chance of shooting my shot at this wedding. Maybe I should have been honest and asked for an introduction.
Walking to my car, i heard someone call out my name. It was Eromz so I walked towards him. As I drew closer, I spotted the Stealer-of-Glances leaning on Eromz’s bonnet.
“Hi”, he stretched his hand for a handshake, “My name is Kolade.”
All coherent thoughts flew out of my mind.
