I went looking for my colleague, Shade, and I asked her for an explanation on how to fill the COM form.

Now Shade was the star of the team. No-one could steal her shine. She had been with the company for over 5 years and knew all the transactions and projects like the back of her hand. Although we graduated from university at the same time, i was not ashamed to humble myself and learn from her.

"Oh ok. I will be glad to help," Shade said enthusiastically.

"It's a piece of cake. To be honest, nobody is really particular about how it looks as long as the date and the final sum are correct". I felt slightly uneasy but I figured she knew best.

"Ok, i am done. Please can you help me look through it first before I send it out? I want to make sure there are no mistakes" I said to Shade.

"Yea, sure," Shade replied, "Hmmm... yea, this is perfect. You can send it to him by email. Just make sure you copy me". So i sent it to Mr. Olusesan, copying my team leader as well.

5 minutes later, Shade sends a follow-up email on mine with a new form correcting half of the content I filled. And guess what, she included a little note - "Kindly ignore the email below. Our new employee was slightly overzealous in sending the form to you. I apologise on her behalf. Please see attached the correctly filled form for your review."

I was aghast!!

Lesson:
1. Not everyone is there to help.
2. You may not want to get involved in office politics, but sometimes you will not be given a choice.
